Asus bamboo series laptop christened

Section: Computers, Laptops

ASUS bamboo series

There has been talk and details about the newest laptop from Asus, mostly centered around the material it’s made from; bamboo. Admittedly this isn’t the first time that bamboo has been used as a computer case (Dell intro’s super-small, eco-friendly bamboo Green desktop PC) but it may be the first time for a laptop, and it does look interesting.

First off, it doesn’t look too ugly, it manages to retain the sleek look of metal while offering a kind of warmth, doubled by the fact that you know its slightly more environmentally friendly. The marketing group for these laptops (christened, in a rather unoriginal fashion, the ‘Bamboo Series’) have done their homework, as in their words the laptops have “artisan-grade Moso bamboo paneling” offering “organic tactility, refreshing scent and minimalist aesthetics” resulting in “an arresting aura of spirituality, warmth and old world charm that synthetic materials and cold, impersonal metals will struggle to replicate.” Admittedly they do kind of shoot themselves in the foot with the last comment as it does imply that all other Asus products are “cold’” but the flowery language makes up for that.

Moving onto the specs we see that these aren’t to bad either, the choice currently being between a 11.1-inch and 12.1-inch screen, the bigger obviously having the better of the two. The 12.1-inch model offers a choice of Intel T9400/P8600/P8400 Core 2 Duo processors, 256MB nVidia GeForce 9300M GS graphics, up to 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hybrid hard disk drive with 256MB of flash memory. The embedded graphics on the 11.1-inch version are fairly poor, but it does come with a regular 80-120GB hard drive or a 32GB SSD. They both come with the usual array of accessories (such as the 0.3-megapixel webcam and card reader) and the ASUS super Hybrid engine power saving technology that can save up to 70% more energy than rivals with the same spec, a definite advantage.

Prices haven’t been released yet, but expect them to be fairly steep, but you must remember that you are paying for the extra environmentally friendly option, and although Asus say that being green is easy, that rule does not always extend to the wallet.

Creative announces new 16GB ZEN Mozaic

Section: Audio, Portable Audio, Video, Portable Video

Creative ZEN Mozaic 16GB

Creative has recently put a new model on their Singapore site, the 16GB ZEN Mozaic. Before, it was available in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB models, and it still comes with exactly the same features.

The Creative ZEN Mozaic features a 1.8-inch TFT screen, format support including MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible, transcoded video support, integrated FM Tuner, voice recorder, built-in speakers, 32 hour audio battery life, and comes in the colors of black, silver, and pink. Unfortunately, no word on pricing at this time. It’s interesting how Creative decides to update their ZEN Mozaic right before Apple holds their special event, and they upgrade it when Microsoft Zune 120GB images have been flying around.

Onto the plain and boring Push To Talk phone… Not as nearly innovative as its V950 cousin, the iDEN only Motorola i365 is another rugged phone built to military standards. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ50

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ50

Some things just go together like Brad and Angelica, peanut butter and jelly, Madonna and controversy. And then there are things that aren’t so buddy-buddy like digital cameras and Wi-Fi. In theory it sounds wonderful. You take your shots, find a hot spot then upload your images to friends and family. Gee, it sounds just like snapping a shot with your cell phone and zipping photos to your buddies—without tracking down a hot spot. And that’s just one of the issues—who wants to spend time uploading huge digicam files while sipping a Doubleshot on Ice to those same pals or trying to see if you’ve subscribed to XYZ hot spot just to log-on? And then there are our “friends”—those lovable SSID and WEP key numbers. With cell phones so handy, it’s no wonder Wi-Fi enabled cameras have gone nowhere as Canon and Nikon have tried unsuccessfully to foist this feature on the public. Now it’s Panasonic’s turn to see if they can overcome the many obstacles and design a Wi-Fi digicam that’s appealing to those beyond uber-geeks. At least they started off with a solid foundation—the popular TZ series of compact cameras with potent 10x zooms. Let’s see if it does the job or it’s just an overpriced digicam…
