Internet Explorer 8 adds more security features

Section: Computers, Software / Applications, Web, Web Browsers

Internet Explorer 8 Beta

Perhaps in a catch-up game with the recent launch of the ultra popular Mozilla Firefox 3 and upcoming Opera 9.5, Microsoft has been beefing up its own Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) with plethora of new security features

Currently in public beta phase, this once dominant Web browser hopes to win back the hearts of its disheartened users with its new anti-malware protection and Cross Site Scripting (XSS) filter to fight against the so-called reflection attacks.

On top of these new developments, Microsoft recently announced other security features in IE8 such as the upgraded version of its phishing filter called SmartScreen Filter, improvement on ActiveX controls as well as anti-social engineering features.

However, most of these features are already available in other Web browsers so it won’t do much to help IE8 differentiate itself from competition. To make matters worse, your computer must be running Windows Vista SP1 or Windows XP SP3 for you to enjoy this added protection.

In short, we suggest sticking with Firefox!

OpenMoko gets anxious, offers FreeRunner a day early

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

OpenMoko FreeRunner now available

Just yesterday it was announced that the FreeRunner from OpenMoko would be ready for sale beginning on July 4, but it seems they just could not wait any longer, and have made the handset available today.

We would expect the original July 7 shipping date will however remain in effect, just due to the weekend. However if you were waiting, head on over and place you order today, after all that just means one less thing you will have to do tomorrow.

Vudu makes its way into more Best Buy locations

Section: Video, Content, Video Providers

Vudu first began showing up in Best Buy locations back in late-March and at the time it was just 24 locations, all of which were located in California. The limited availability was thought to be a testing period to make sure the devices would be able to sell as expected.

Well, jump forward a little over a month and it looks like it must have been successful because Vudu and Best Buy have just announced a little more widespread availability, however it is still not nationwide.

They have remained in California, but also expanded to Arizona and Illinois, all in all it looks like they are now available in almost 70 Best Buy locations. In addition to the move into Best Buy locations in other states, Vudu has also recently added 35 new movies to own and 30 new movies to rent.

Gadgetell Quick Review: Kensington Slimblade Presenter Media Mouse

Section: Peripherals, Mice / Keyboards, Reviews

Kensington Slimblade Presenter Media Mouse Powerpoint Mouse

The first time my dad used a mouse, he held it like a remote control, waving it futilely at the screen. The folks at Kensington may have witnessed this, for they’ve created the Slimblade Presenter Media Mouse, a mouse that actually can be used as a remote—to control PowerPoint presentations and iTunes playlists.

A navigation pad on the flip side of the mouse allows the user to click through slides while pointing out important details with a laser pointer. For leisure time, a switch puts the remote in media mode, allowing it to operate basic functions in iTunes: play/pause, next/previous track and volume. The shape of the navigation pad resembles the scroll wheel of an iPod, but unfortunately it lacks that degree of functionality.

The mouse set up was easy. Plug in the USB dongle and you’re ready to go. And the range was as advertised. The remote worked 30 feet away, even through a wall. Whether you use that to impress your colleagues or startle your roommate, that’s up to you.

The device features:

  • Up to 30ft. range
  • Up to 6 mo. battery life
  • 360 degree scroll ball
  • 5-year limited warranty
  • Supports Windows XP/Vista, Mac OSX 10.4

Package Contents:

  • 2.4 GHz wireless laser mouse
  • USB Receiver (stores inside battery compartment)
  • 2 AAA batteries
  • User’s manual
  • Driver CD (Mac users must download the driver from the Kensington web site)

Get it now for $79.99 at Kensington.

OpenTable Restaurant Resevation System Goes Mobile

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Gadgets / Other, Lifestyle

Restaurant mobile shot

I don’t really eat out often, but I know business people who eat out constantly.  Of course, some of these restaurants require a reservation, and making the reservation over the phone can be pretty time-consuming, not to mention frustrating.

OpenTable has simplified this process by creating a real-time online reservation system for diners, as well as reservation and guest management solutions for restaurants.

The company has recently launched a Beta version of the OpenTable Mobile, which allows for consumers to find real-time availability and book restaurant reservations with mobile devices.

All a user needs to do is take out their mobile device, select a restaurant, the date, the time, and it will even tell you when the closest available reservation is available.  Now it is easier to create a reservation than ever before.

The 70 million diners have used the reservations for Open Table, and 8,500 restaurants have replaced their traditional pen-and-paper reservation books with the OpenTable System.

Motorola Napolean Q9: Verizon’s World Phone

Man, Motorola just can’t keep a lid on anything anymore can they? We’ve got a hold of a phone codenamed the “Napolean” and it’s a CDMA EV-DO Rev. A Q9 with full GSM world roaming capabilities. This even includes the U.S. 850MHz/1900MHz bands! Even though it’s Verizon branded and will launch on Verizon, we loaded in our AT&T SIM and away we went. We’ve found the following specs on the phone so far: fingerprint scanner (seriously, on the back), Windows Mobile 6.1, EV-DO Rev. A, quad-band EDGE, 2 megapixel camera with flash, stereo speakers, 320×240 resolution screen, Wi-Fi, and a 1500mAh battery. The keyboard isn’t as good as the first Q9 or Q9m, and the d-pad is incredibly stiff and difficult to use. Sound sounded good though, and the screen seems to be the same as the original Q9s. We’ll keep diggin’, but in the meantime, take a look at a gallery, ok?
