OLPC XO laptop buyers, today is the last day to activate your free T-Mobile Hotspot account

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops

During the “Give 1 Get 1” sale for the OLPC XO laptop, T-Mobile had been offering a free year of T-Mobile Hotspot access with any G1G1 purchase. Well, it seems that there was a time limit on just when you could activate your account and begin your free year of service and today, June 30 is the last day to take advantage of that offer. So if you were amongst that group and for some reason have not activated your T-Mobile service or were just holding off for some reason, you better act quick or risk loosing that perk.

In addition, it looks like the “Give 1 Get 1” program will be making a come back as expected later in this year. A recent update to the laptop.org wiki states to check the “website for more information after September 1.” Hopefully the sales will begin on, if not shortly after September 1, that way we can see some holiday time deliveries without much worry of a late delivery. The G1G1 is being worked on for “the US, Canada, and several other countries.”

The beta edition will be available for public download and will be based on the same engine as the desktop version of 9.5. The new version of the browser will offer support for Opera widgets, Javascript, AJAX and Flash (Lite 3.0).

Although Opera Mobile is available for both Windows Mobile and Symbian-based phones, this release announcement only mentions a Windows Mobile release. You can also already find a version of Opera Mobile 9.5 on currently shipping phones such as the HTC Touch Diamond.

T-Mobile initiates per-message SMS rate hike

Here we go again. T-Mobile has just quietly announced that they will be raising their per-message SMS fees to 20 cents from the current 15 cent benchmark effective August 29th. Sure, they’re merely responding to the current industry average price, but when you’re hailed as one of the most value-oriented carriers in the country, a move like this could have some pretty negative implications. Of course, a move like this raises the age old question for T-Mobile subscribers looking for a back door out of their contract: Will I be able to leave without incurring an ETF? This all depends on who you talk to, but these rate hikes are generally seen as material breaches of contract on the carrier side which, assuming you push hard enough, will usually result in an ETF-free departure. As always, we don’t advocate this sort of buffoonery, but if you’ve been itching to try out another carrier’s airwaves, this might be the right time to step up to the plate. Oh, and nice timing, T-Mobile, as no one was hoping for an added incentive to shift over to the iPhone 3G’s network of choice, right?

Sony Mylo 2 gets minor update with Video Recording

Are you one of the 78 people out there that actually bought a Sony Mylo 2? Today is your (moderately) lucky day. Sony has just released a minor update to its diminutive little messenging/PMP/gaming gadget. The new firmware version brings video recording to the Mylo 2 by way of its rear-facing camera, which should allow you to share as many embarrassing moments with the outside world as you’d like, provided you’re in range of a Wi-Fi connection. Other enhancements include support for 16 GB Memory Sticks, as well as a variety of UI enhancements.
