Sprint to Put More Google Applications on its Cell Phones


Sprint and Google today announced a partnership aimed at more deeply integrating Google applications and services into Sprint customers' mobile experience. As part of the deal, Google will become Sprint's preferred mobile search provider and Sprint users will have easier access to Google Maps for mobile, YouTube and more.

Sprint and Google are committed to providing users with the most dynamic mobile experience possible. Both companies have actively advocated the importance of an open mobile ecosystem and understand that users should have more choice when it comes to selecting and accessing content on a mobile phone.

Sprint Loses 1.09 Million Subscribers & $505 Million


Sprint Nextel Corp. today reported that for the quarter, total wireless subscribers declined by 1.09 million due to losses of 1.07 million post-paid subscribers and 543,000 traditional prepaid users, partially offset by gains of 343,000 Boost Unlimited and 183,000 wholesale and affiliate subscribers.

The company reported its first quarter 2008 consolidated net operating revenues for the quarter were $9.3 billion, an 8% decline compared to $10.1 billion reported in the first quarter of 2007 and a 5% decline compared to $9.8 billion in the fourth quarter.  The company reported a net loss of $505 million.

Verizon Wireless Purchases Wireless Assets of SureWest Communications

Verizon Wireless has purchased the wireless assets of SureWest Communications, operating as SureWest Wireless, for $69.0 million.

The purchase includes SureWest Wireless’ spectrum licenses, and network and operations assets in the greater Sacramento area. The licenses, which cover a population of 3.8 million people and overlap with areas currently served by Verizon Wireless, will expand the company’s capacity in that area.

Verizon Wireless will transition SureWest Wireless’ approximately 50,000 customers to the Verizon Wireless network by late summer, after a billing system conversion has been completed. Customers will enjoy service on the nation’s most reliable wireless network, including the company’s high-speed broadband network for accessing the Internet and e-mail, and downloading music, games and videos.

RIM, RBC & Thomson Reuters to Create Fund to Invest in Mobile Apps & Services

Research In Motion, RBC and Thomson Reuters, today announced plans to launch the BlackBerry Partners Fund, a US$150 million venture capital fund, to invest in mobile applications and services for the BlackBerry platform and other mobile platforms. The Fund is to be co-managed by JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners.

Agnostic to both stage and balance sheet, the BlackBerry Partners Fund will not restrict the development of mobile applications and services to any single mobile platform or any specific industry segment. The Fund will be designed to advance the industry by fostering development and driving the entrepreneurial spirit to create the most innovative mobile offerings for customers.
